Marie Verstraete

Marie Verstraete an expert in medieval and renaissance music, both as a musician and as a musicologist.

She started playing the recorder at the age of twelve under the guidance of Joris Van Goethem. She continued her studies with Bart Spanhove and Bart Coen at the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven, Belgium, graduating with a Bachelor of Music in 2007 and a Master of Music with teacher’s diploma in 2009. In 2010, she graduated with a Master of Medieval and Renaissance Music at the Musikhochschule Trossingen. She studied Renaissance viol with Lorenz Duftschmid in Trossingen and vielle at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Randall Cook. At the same time she completed her M.A. in Musicology with honors.

She has performed concerts all over Europe with ensembles such as the Isabella, LaReverdie, La Fonte Musica, Les Riches Heures, Il Nostromo del Sogno, Mon cuer mon ame, Aquil’AlterA, Pentagonale, Officium, Armonico Tributo Austria, and L’estro armonico.

Aside from her performing activities, she is in demand as recorder and ensemble teacher. She regularly gives workshops at the international recorder festival Blokfluitdagen in Mechelen, Belgium. Moreover, 2014-2017 she worked as a researcher and medieval music history teacher at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland.
